What is Professional Development?

January 08, 2018

ESSA updated the definition by stating: “The term ‘professional development’ means activities that … are sustained, intensive, collaborative, job-embedded, data-driven, and classroom focused.” (S. 1177, Section 8002, page 295, paragraph 42) Professional development for teachers is a key mechanism for improving classroom instruction and student achievement (Ball & Cohen, 1999). In nine studies from REL 2007-No.33, professional development's effects on student achievement were mediated by teacher knowledge and practice in the classroom and professional development that took place in the context of high standards, challenging curricula, system-wide accountability, and high-stakes assessments. Fourteen hours of professional development showed a positive and significant effect on student achievement. Workshops or summer institutes were employed directly to teachers in the studies. Follow up sessions supported the main professional development.

Osage County Interlocal Cooperative (OCIC), based in Hominy, OK, is pleased to host professional development on January 15, 2018, for 250 area teachers. Presenters in Math, Social Studies, English Language Arts, Science, Physical Education, and Special Education from the Oklahoma State Department of Education will be here along with Kathy Jackson from KidWind/RECHARGE, and Adam Howard, a veteran teacher on how to integrate 21st century technology into the classroom. This 2018 Winter Conference is provided by OCIC to bring the tools, strategies, language, and mindset to support all teachers' growth as reflective practitioners. Lunch is provided by Lexia, A Rosetta Stone Company. Vendors from Bigbee Learning Resources, iStation, Lexia Learning, Oklahoma Insurance Department, and Read Naturally will be on hand to visit with teachers.
